The Paks-2 NPP construction project is being implemented on the basis of the Russian-Hungarian intergovernmental agreement of January 14, 2014 and three basic contracts, according to which the station will be built on a turnkey basis.
About the project
Brief description of the project:
- Construction of two new advanced power units with WWER-1200 reactor type (power units No. 5, No. 6) at the Paks NPP site
- Contract: EPC (“turnkey”)
- Customer: MVM Paks II
- General designer: JSC ATOMPROEKT
- General contractor: JSC ASE EC (Engineering division of Rosatom State Corporation)
Project implementation period:
- Preparatory period: 2015-2017
- Main period: 2018-2027
Location of the construction site:
- Location near Paks, Tolna region, Hungary (120 km from Budapest)
Currently, four power units with WWER-440 reactors are operating at the Paks NPP, built according to a Soviet design.
In 2009, the Hungarian Parliament approved the construction of two new power units at the NPP. In December 2014, Rosatom State Corporation and MVM (Hungary) signed a contract for the construction of new units of the station. It is planned that two units (No. 5 and No. 6) of the NPP design with VVER-1200 will be built at Paks-2 NPP.
On April 29, 2017, the EPC contract came into force in full, including the financial obligations of the parties. The company successfully passed the Customer's audit and received a Nuclear Qualification Certificate.
Paks NPP will have two power units with a capacity of 1200 megawatts each. Thus, the construction of Paks NPP will ensure reliable energy security for Hungary for many years.
The construction of Paks II NPP is carried out by the engineering division of Rosatom State Corporation, JSC ASE EC. The Paks II NPP will be built using the best practices in design, construction and equipment supply.
The main construction license was issued by the Hungarian regulator in August 2022. The license confirms that modern Russian VVER-1200 power units of the III+ generation meet the most stringent international and European safety requirements.
At the end of June 2024, the European Union recorded in writing the exemption of the Paks II NPP project from any sanctions. Now EU companies do not have to obtain permission from regulators, and European governments cannot prevent their companies from participating in the project.
