About the project

It has been implemented since 1994 under a production sharing agreement. In 2022, about 60% of the produced liquefied gas was intended for Japan.

The project operator is the Russian Sakhalin Energy LLC, which replaced the previous operator, the offshore company Sakhalin Energy Investment Company Ltd. (Sakhalin Energy), in 2022.

Production is carried out using 3 platforms:

• Piltun-Astokhskaya-A (PA-A / Molikpaq)
• Piltun-Astokhskaya-B (PA-B)
• Lunskaya-A (LUN-A)

All platforms are operated year-round in conditions of severe climatic, wave, ice and seismic loads.

The produced oil and gas are delivered via the trans-Sakhalin pipeline system through the integrated onshore processing complex to the Prigorodnoye production complex, which includes a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant and an oil export terminal.

The LNG plant began operations in 2009, its design capacity is 9.6 million tons of LNG per year.

This is the first liquefied natural gas plant in Russia.

It includes two process lines and general-purpose facilities. The process lines prepare and liquefy gas. LNG production uses dual mixed refrigerant technology. This technology was specially developed for the Sakhalin LNG plant to ensure maximum production efficiency in the cold Sakhalin winters.
