How We Found a Qualified Medical Advisor for a Nuclear Power Plant During the Pandemic
As part of a large-scale international project to construct a nuclear power plant in Hungary, our client—a leading engineering company—approached MPH Vostok with a unique and complex request. They required a Medical Advisor—an experienced medical professional capable of establishing a medical office from the ground up. This role encompassed providing medical assistance to employees and their families, conducting preventative health measures, medical examinations, establishing partnerships with healthcare government institutions in Hungary, and participating in the procurement of medical insurance.
The search for a suitable candidate was complicated by several significant factors:
- The candidate needed to be fluent in both Hungarian and Russian to effectively communicate with local health authorities and Russian-speaking employees.
- A higher medical degree and a valid professional license were essential to ensure the legitimacy of issuing medical reports, certificates of work capability, and prescriptions.
- The candidate was required to relocate to the city of Paks—a small town distant from major urban centers— which posed additional challenges in attracting qualified specialists.
- Lastly, this request coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic, during which the healthcare system was under immense strain, experiencing workforce shortages that heightened competition for qualified personnel and further complicated the search process.
Even though the medical profile of the vacancy was far from our team's primary expertise, we made the decision to support our client in filling this critical role.
While working on other vacancies within this project, we immersed ourselves in the specifics of the Hungarian candidate market and understood that a successful search for this position would only be feasible by leveraging all possible professional contacts and obtaining referrals. The greatest challenge was identifying Russian-speaking doctors; we meticulously gathered information using the principle of weak ties, reaching out to all Hungarian contacts for assistance in finding the desired specialist. This approach yielded results: we identified three candidates, with whom we were able to engage!
Subsequently, a painstaking process ensued to facilitate dialogue between the candidates and the client, uncover motivations, and align tasks and expectations. However, we recognized that the primary challenge of this task had been overcome and that we would be able to meet the client’s needs even amid high uncertainty and complexity.
