NPP Rooppur

The first NPP in Bangladesh, Rooppur, with two VVER-1200 reactors with a total capacity of 2,400 megawatts, is being built 160 kilometers from the capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka. A Russian design with VVER-1200 reactors has been selected for the station.

Brief description of the project:

• Location: 170 km from the capital, Dhaka (16.8 million people), 85 km from Rajah (450 thousand people), 10 km from Ishwardi (110 thousand people) and 3 km from the village of Greencity.

• Reactor type: VVER-1200. VVER-1200 reactor plant of generation III+.

• Number of power units: 2

• General designer: Atomenergoproekt JSC

• General contractor: Atomstroyexport JSC

• Customer: Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC)

The service life of the power units is 60 years with the possibility of extension for another 20 years;

In November 2011, Russia and Bangladesh signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the construction of the 1st Bangladesh NPP;

In mid-December 2015, a general contract was signed and in early 2017, the Russian authorities provided Bangladesh with a state loan in the amount of 11.38 billion US dollars to finance the main stage of the NPP construction.

In November 2017, concrete was poured into the foundation slab of the reactor building of power unit No. 1, in July 2018 - power unit No. 2.

The construction of the NPP began in 2021.

The cost of the NPP is estimated at $12.65 billion, 90% of the construction is financed by a Russian loan with a repayment period of 28 years.

On October 5, 2023, Rosatom transferred nuclear fuel to the Rooppur NPP.

In December 2024, the project is preparing to launch the reactor of the 1st power unit.
