El Dabaa NPP

El Dabaa NPP is the first nuclear power plant in Egypt, which will be built in the city of El Dabaa in the Matrouh Governorate on the Mediterranean coast, approximately 300 kilometers northwest of Cairo.

Brief description of the project:

• Location: near El Alamein, Egypt

• Reactor type: WWER-1200

• Number of power units: 4

• General designer: JSC Atomenergoproekt.

• General contractor: Joint-stock company Atomstroyexport

• Customer: El-Dabaa NPP

Russian-Egyptian cooperation in the construction of the El Dabaa NPP is carried out on the basis of the intergovernmental "Agreement on cooperation in the field of peaceful uses of atomic energy" (MPS) dated March 25, 2008.

On March 18, 2015, the Rosatom State Corporation designated Rusatom Overseas JSC (Rusatom Energy International) as the project integrator and Atomstroyexport JSC as the general contractor for the NPP construction.

The project envisages the construction of four power units with VVER-1200 reactors.

On October 20, 2015, a contract was signed for preparatory work for engineering surveys to develop design documentation for the El Dabaa NPP.

In April 2019, the El Dabaa NPP construction site (the general contractor, Atomstroyexport JSC, is part of the Engineering Division of the Rosatom State Corporation) was inspected by the Nuclear and Radiological Safety Regulatory Authority of the Arab Republic of Egypt. The site was found to be "compliant with Egypt and the IAEA requirements." In June 2022, the production of equipment for the El Dabaa NPP began,

On June 29, 2022, the Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulation Authority (ENRRA) issued a permit to Rosatom for the construction of Unit 1, and on July 20, 2022, the ceremony of pouring the first concrete into the foundation slab of the power unit took place,

On October 31, 2022, ENRRA issued a permit for the construction of Unit 2, on November 19, 2022, the first concrete was poured into the foundation slab of the power unit,

On March 29, 2023, ENRRA permission was received for Unit 3, the first concrete in its foundation slab followed on May 3, 2023,

On August 31, 2023, a license was issued for the construction of Unit 4, the first concrete was poured on January 23, 2024 g.

The construction of the El Dabaa NPP is proceeding ahead of schedule.

In October 2023, a melt localization device was installed at the 1st power unit of the plant, and the process of installing a melt catcher at the 2nd power unit began in November (according to the plan, this operation was scheduled for 2024).

Thus, the construction of the 1st and 2nd power units is proceeding almost in parallel.

All four power units of the NPP are planned to be commissioned between 2028 and 2030.
